Position Overview

The Luminos.AI Data Science Fellowship is designed for recent graduates of data science (or applied mathematics) degree or certificate program interested in developing cutting-edge software within the world of AI law, risk, and automation. Fellows must be passionate about building software, the intersection of law and technology, motivated, conscientious, and reliable. 

This role provides direct engagement in supporting legal, privacy, data science, product and responsible AI teams at Luminos customers within a fast-moving start up environment. Fellows will gain valuable, hands-on experience in a dynamic software company where their contributions will shape the SaaS platforms customers use to address real AI risk on a daily basis.

The length of the Fellowship is flexible, but usually lasts ~3 months, although it may be extended upon mutual agreement.  This Winter 2026 Data Science Fellowship is anticipated to run through March 2026. Anticipated hours are negotiable based on the needs of the fellow.

Responsibilities

  • Develop algorithms and models to assess and mitigate legal risks in AI outputs, focusing on compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Conduct research on emerging AI technologies and propose innovative solutions to enhance their governability.
  • Work with customers to mitigate issues in both their traditional ML systems as well as their generative AI systems.
  • Work hand in hand with Luminos Legal Automation Fellows to ensure our AI systems stay current with numerous AI laws and regulations as they are proposed and/or implemented.

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years experience in a quantitative field such as mathematics, engineering, computer science, or economics.
  • BA/BS required, MS or PhD also encouraged to apply; responsibilities and compensation will be commensurate with training and experience.
  • Coding experience for statistical / scientific analysis
  • Proficient in Python.
  • Intellectual curiosity and excitement to find innovative ways to apply statistical and quantitative analysis to the legal and policy assessments of AI-based services.
  • The ability to effectively and clearly communicate the results of your work, and the desire to learn and integrate understanding of legal standards around technological systems.

Preferred Skills (a plus):

  • Direct experience with AI/ML development, model audits, red-teaming of Generative AI systems, or other hands-on design or operational time with related systems strongly preferred.
  • Experience with prompt engineering, system prompts, generative AI model fine tuning or distillation.
  • The ability to balance independent work and close collaboration; strong initiative and creative approaches to new situations and challenges is a plus.
  • Work well remotely, understanding the need for clear and effective communications and working within project-based teams.
  • Strong writing and speaking skills, particularly in conveying complex technical subjects in understandable ways to non-technical audiences.
